The (in)Famous ‘WKRP In Cincinnati’ Turkey Drop!

Remember the 1970s-80s sitcom ‘WKRP In Cincinnati’? If you do, you likely remember the WKRP ‘Turkey Drop’ (really named ‘Turkeys Away’) episode! Not realizing that turkeys don’t really fly, the station has a promotion where they drop turkeys from a helicopter onto a crowd in a shopping center. No people are hurt but it wasn’t too good for the turkeys! It was a very funny episode none the less.

The story isn’t entirely fiction. A station, WQXI, in Atlanta likely had an event where they dropped turkeys into a crowd from a truck. This story may be a little off as it may have been a stunt by a Texas station, KBOX, instead. The confusion may have been that a former KBOX employee worked at WQXI. WQXI, not so much WKRC (a real Cincinnati radio station) was the model for the ‘WKRP in Cincinnati’ sitcom. A station in Illinois, WDZ is strongly rumored to have had an event where they actually dropped turkeys from an airplane as a promotion. That story is said to still be well known in central Illinois radio lore!

More info about the WQXI like may be found at and on YouTube.
